Canada, Pomeroy finish just off the podium

Canada, with Placentia’s Jordan Pomeroy on the roster, finished fourth at the 2018 WBSC world junior men’s softball championship in Prince Albert, Sask.
The Canadians, the second seeds in the tourney, were eliminated with a loss to New Zealand Saturday night.
Canada had defeated the New Zealanders â€" top-ranked in the event â€" in round-robin play, part of a 5-0 run for the host team in the preliminary schedule of the tournament.
But they couldn’t do it a second time, falling 5-2 to the Kiwis in the what was the Canadians’ third contest of the playoff rounds.
The 18-year-old Pomeroy, Canada’s youngest player in the tournament, finished tied for the team lead with eight RBIs while posting a .316 batting average. He reached base 10 times on six hits and four walks, hit two homers â€" including a grand slam â€" and scored five runs.
Canada lost to Australia 2-0 in their first game of t he playoffs, then took their double life into a Saturday-morning matchup against Argentina, which they won 6-4. That set up the evening game against New Zealand, which would finish third in the championship.
